How to Duplicate Assets
Duplicating an asset is a quick way to create a similar asset without manually entering all the details again. This is especially useful for assets that come in multiple units or have similar specifications.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Open an Asset: Navigate to your asset list and click on any asset to view its details
- Click Duplicate: In the asset detail view, click the Duplicate button in the top-right area
- Review the Form: The duplication form opens with all the original asset's information pre-filled
- Modify Required Fields: At minimum, change the asset name to make it unique
- Update Other Fields: Edit serial number, location, assigned-to, or any other fields as needed
- Save: Click Save Asset to create the new asset
What Gets Copied
- Asset name (you should modify this)
- Category
- Manufacturer and model
- Serial number (you should modify this)
- Purchase information (date, amount, vendor)
- Location
- Assigned to
- Status
- Custom fields
- Maintenance schedule settings
- Attached documents
What Does NOT Get Copied
- Barcode: A new unique barcode is generated
- Bill of Materials: Component relationships are not copied
- Maintenance History: Previous maintenance records stay with the original
- Document Annotations: Notes on documents are not duplicated
- Audit Trail: The new asset starts with a fresh history
Tips
- Always update the serial number to ensure uniqueness
- Verify the location is appropriate for the new asset
- Check that tier limits allow creating additional assets
- Use duplication for batch entry of similar items
