Managing Locations
Locations help you track where your assets are physically stored or deployed. Proper location management ensures you always know where to find your equipment.
Location Types
Choose from 10 location types to organize your facilities:
- Building: Complete structures (main campus, warehouse building)
- Floor: Levels within a building
- Room: Specific spaces (conference room, server room)
- Warehouse: Storage facilities for inventory
- Office: Work areas or departments
- Storage: Closets, cabinets, or storage areas
- Production: Manufacturing or assembly areas
- Outdoor: Parking lots, yards, external areas
- Vehicle: Company vehicles that contain assets
- Other: Any location that doesn't fit above categories
Adding a Location
- Navigate to Locations in the main menu
- Click Add Location
- Enter the location details:
- Name: A unique identifier (e.g., "Building A - Floor 2")
- Type: Select from the available location types
- Description: Additional notes about this location
- Address: Optional street address, city, state, zip, and country
- Click Save
Editing a Location
To update an existing location:
- Find the location in the table
- Click the pencil icon (Edit) in the Actions column
- Update the fields you want to change
- Click Save to apply your changes
Note: Editing a location name will not automatically update assets assigned to that location.
Deleting a Location
To remove a location:
- Find the location in the table
- Click the trash icon (Delete) in the Actions column
- Confirm the deletion in the dialog
Warning: Deleting a location does not delete assets at that location. Consider reassigning assets first.
Asset Count
Each location displays an asset count showing how many assets are assigned to it. This helps with:
- Inventory planning and space management
- Identifying unused or overcrowded locations
- Understanding asset distribution across your facilities
Best Practices
- Use a consistent hierarchy: Building > Floor > Room
- Be specific: "Server Room A" is better than "Room"
- Include addresses: Essential for off-site or multiple facilities
- Review regularly: Remove obsolete locations
- Keep it simple: Only create locations you'll actually use
